WEOLFrom C1“Sixty is a landmark, Adams said. “It’s been an honor for us to be able to serve the community for that time.”Since its first broadcast, when it was the only radio station in Lorain County, the station has seen its fair share of changes, most noticeably in its programming. For its first 50 years, WEOL played music from various genres and gradually interspersed news and sports into its broadcasts, according to Adams. On Nov. 28, 1997, the station switched to its current mix of news, talk shows and sports coverage. The weekday morning “Les in the Morning is WEOL’s only local talk show, but throughout the day the station plays syndicated talk shows including Glenn Beck, Paul Harvey, Clark Howard and Sean Hannity. The stations news staff compiles brief local news reports that are broadcast at the top of every hour.At night, WEOL broadcasts local sports, especially area high school football and basketball games and tournament games for other high school sports.“We think our coverage of high school sports is second to none, Adams said. The station also airs Indians and Cavaliers games, Ohio State football and basketball games, and Columbus Blue Jackets hockey games. When none of these sports is being played, Fox Sports Radio gives listeners the scores for teams around the country.Another big change that has happened during Adams’ 19 years at the station is the shift toward a more computer-run broadcasting booth and newsroom.“Computer technolog)' is an important component of broadcasting right now, Adams said. The constant throughout the life of the station has been its listeners, who are asked to become a part of the anniversary celebrations. To commemorate the start of WEOL's 61st year, old and new listeners alike are encouraged to call in to the “Les in the Morning” from 6 to 9 a m. to share their memories of the station.Lorain County Printing and Publishing, which publishes The Chronicle-Telegram, also owns Elyria-Lorain Broadcasting Co., WEOL’s parent company.Contact Alison Dietz at 329-7126 or aOietz^chromcfetcom
