KUZZ-TV gets back on air — somewhatBy RICK BENTLEYCakforman TV editorWork progressed on two fronts Friday to get KUZZ-TV, Channel 45, back on the air after a million-dollar fire destroyed the local independent’s transmitters and backup power generator.Authorities say the fire at Channel 45’s Mount Adelaide location might have been arson. The fire was reported at 9:46 p.m. Thursday but it took 45 minutes for units to reach the mountain facility from the closest fire station at Edison.Temporary equipment is being flown in from Pennsylvania, said Mel Owens, general manager of Buck Owens Productions.“We hope to be back on the air by Wednesday and Thursday by the Latest, he said.Owens said that while the signal wiU not be as strong as before, thetemporary low-power signal will at least allow the station to broadcast to the Bakersfield area.KUZZ also got crosstown help to get its signal to some cable subscribers earlier.Channel 17 has loaned us equipment that allows us to get our signal from the originating point on Sillect Avenue to the cable head end for TimeWaraer. That will allow us to at least get our signal to those subscribers, Owens said.“Then TimeWamer will feed our signal to Cox Cable for their subscribers.”The same setup was not available for Valley Wireless and those subscribers won't be able to see KUZZ programming until the temporary transmitter is in place.Owens said after the insurance company finishes examining the scene, plans for rebuilding the facility will begin.
