THE ALTOONA MIRROR, ALTOONA, VBellwood Man Heads DivisionOf Polymer Chemistry of ACS(ftpmal to Altoona Mirror}NEW YORK Dr. Raymond M Fuoss, Sterling professor of chemistry at Yale university, has been elected 1954 chairman of the American Chemical society’s division of polymer chemistry. The retiring chairman is Professor Paul J. Flory of Cornell university. Polymers are giant molecules, such as those that make up rubber, plasties and synthetic libers.Professor H. F. Mark, director of the Polymer Research institute of the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, was chosen vice chairman and Dr. Joseph Dec of the Johns-Manville research center, Manville, N. J., was named secre-tary-treasurer for a three-yearterm.Professor Fuoss, who received the American Chemical society award in pure chemistry in 393fi, is an authority on polymers and the electrical conductivity of chemicalsubstances. Professor Fuoss has published about 100 papers in various scientific and technicaljournals.Horn at Bellwood, Ph., in 1905,Professor Fiioss was graduated from Harvard university with the Sc R degree, summa cum laude, in 15*25. On graduation, he received the Sheldon fellowship, and spent the following academic year at. the University of Munich. He spent one semester as Austin teaching fellow at Harvard, and in the winter of 1927 joined the staff of Skinner, Sherman and Eaaelen, consulting chemists in Boston.Professor Fuoss entered the graduate school at Brown university in 1930. and received the Ph. D. in 1932. He became research instructor at Brown in 1932 and later assistant professor of chemistry for research.He was on leave of absence during the academic year 1933-34, as international research fellow at the University of Ij ipzig and at Cambridge university. In 193fi, he joined the staff of the research laboratory of the General Electric company at Schenectady, In 1945 he was appointed Sterling professor of chemistry at Yale.Professor Fuoss was national lecturer of Sigma Xi during 1947. He Is a member of the American Chemical society, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Alpha Chi Sigma and the New York Academy of Sciences.lilt. RAYMOND M.
