Berkhofer Gets Fellowship For Indian StudyProf. Robert F. Berkhofer, Jr. of (he University of Wisconsin Madison History Department has received a National Endowment for the Humanities Senior Fellowship for the academic year 173-1974.One of 101 recipients selected from among 603 applicants, Prof. Berkbofcr will studyevolving conceptions of the American Indian. *The specific locus of the study is the comparison of the' general white stereotypes of the American Indian with the more specific understanding of tribal differences in culture and social organization held by more knowledgeable whites cither at the same time or at different times.Berkhofer’s study will include explorers; government officials; missionaries; social scientists, and other whites’ perceptions of specific tribes and the nature of Indian governments and cultures from the time of Columbus to the present day.National Endowment for the Humanities Senior Fellowships carry a maximum stipend of$18,000 per academic year.
