Increasing PopularityOf Smiley Faces NotedBy The REV. DAVID FREES,Pastor ofFirst L.P. ChurchOne of thephenomena Ifascinatinghave noticedduring the past several months).edl-11rd11i,nnnifye11it113i.gdis the rise of the ‘Smiley'ssymbol. If you have been alert to thuslatest fad, you have noticed that a smiling face is sUmped on posters, buttons, sweatshirts, jeans, stationary, and other ordinary everyday items. Nurses wear these ‘Smiley’ buttons on their uniforms, posters appear in school classrooms and I have evene seen them on bumper stickers.During a time of increased concern over the economy of the wage-prize freeze, a war that keeps on killing, a society that keeps on polluting, a continualthe crime andrise in tne crime ana drug traffic, and divorce statistics that go higher and higher, it isgood to see a symbol of hope andgoodwill emerge in our time. Now whether the people who wear this symbol bring to it theChristian voice of love isanother question. But to see a symbol like this become so popular in such a short time indicates to me thatpeople are hungry for a positive attitude in our time, a desire for better feelings and relation-betweenships oetween our brothers and sisters.humanThe next time you are indowntownlook around and see how many‘Smiley’ faces you see. I wonder if that face will become just another fad or whether it willstay and remind us of our Christian stance.i. I hope it stays.. . • • ■ «.* • •••*«••• O'* » •-’ * • M • • • i »_»*•••.•.
