BECHSTEIN HALL*Lucie Hawson and Mr. Atherton Smith, gave an excellent pianoforte and vocal recital at Beehstem Hall last night Miss Mawson. is a clever pianist, and her interpretation of Beethoven's Sonata (Op. 31, No. 2$ was thoughtful and sincere, while hex execution wa9 clear and precise. Miss Mawson also played the extremely difficult and exacting Schumann's Fantaisae, Op.17 j but undoubtedly she excelled in the lighter pieces, such as the Wagner-Liszt “Spinning Song5' and Sainfc-Saens5 Etude” (Op. 52. No. 3).. Mr. AthertonSmith possesses a very fine baritone voice, which was heard to great advantage in has.varied selection of songs.. By way of contrast at the outset- he sang Schumann’s Schone Wiege meiner Leiden and Hensehel's/‘Young Dieterich,” the latterwith considerable dramatic power; Two songs by .the American composer Laimas greatly interested the audience, Barted . Lips” (Edward Carpenter) and The Voice of the Rain (Walt Whitman). The song entitled Souvenir, by Paul Mahlendorff, was given for the first time last- night, and was very well received. The words were by Mr. AthertonSmith h£r* H.: Garstin accompaniedthre^’of his own songs, “Love Notes, The Wood Pigeon,” and Since, the latter being perhaps the most successful of the three. ’*• Thfs is not the first' time Mr. Atherton Smith has given a vocal recital. We sincerely, trust it wilLnot bo the last.
