Trained R.CM.P. Tracking Dog Helps Const. S. Gatchell Search For Missing North Dakota ChildConstable Stan Gatchell of the R.C.M.P. and his trained tracking dog “Tiny”, played a prominent part in the search last month for a four-year-old North Dakota boy who wandered away from his farm home northeast of Powers Lake, North Dakota.Constable Gatchell, who is the son of Mrs. Cecil Gatchell, Carlisle Ave., was flown down from Regina, where he is now stationed, to take part in the search for the missing youth, LaVern Enget. He and Tiny joined the search on October 19, two days after the boy wandered off into the fields and rough ranch country surrounding his home.Tiny picked up one trail which eventually led to the farmhouse, and later picked up a second trail which led south away from the farmhouse into rough country. The dog lost the second trail after following it for some time. The search for the Enget boywas the biggest manhunt ever held in North Dakota, with thousands of people taking part in it before hope of finding the boy or his body was abandoned two weeks later. Helicopters and Civil Air Patrol planes joined in the search from the air, and long “human chains” made up of searchers with linked hands combed every inch of the area within twomiles of the Enget home. Pictures of the search were carried in the Nov. 1 issue of“Life” magazine.Const. Gatchell and Tiny have taken part in manhunts for missing persons before while he was stationed at Sydney, N. S. Const. Gatchell and the famous five-year-old tracking dog also took part in the Sportsmen’s Show at the Coliseum in March, 1953. He has been stationed at Regina since January of this year and was married in August at Sydney, N. S.
