Katrina fizzles out after destructive runMIAMI (UPI) — Tropical storm Katrina, which killed two persons in Cuba and doused the Bahamas with 14 inches of rain, merged today with a low pressure system over the western Atlantic and quickly dissipated. No deaths or injuries were reported in the Bahamas, but heavy rains fell in the central Bahamas, and flood damage to tomato, watermelon and corn crops at Long Island was reported.Radio Havana broadcast that two men were killed when Katrina lashed the island with 85 mph winds Thursday. At 11 a.m. today, an advisory from the National Hurricane Center in Miami said reconnaissance and ship reports indicated the remnants of Katrina were ab-. sorbed in a large non-tropical low -, pressure system over the western ' Atlantic. The remains of the system were located about 600 miles east of the northern Bahamas and moving east northeastward about 35 mph. Any remaining gale force winds are associated with a few of the heavier squalls, forecasters said in the final advisory on the storm.Forecaster John Hope said the 11th tropical tempest of the 1981 season no longer posed a threat to land, but advised shipping interests to monitor wind currents in the area.Radio Havana reported that 290,658 people and 196,000 head of cattle and other livestock were evacuated when Katrina slashed across the communist island. The storm spent most of its fury on Cuba’s towering mountain peaks, and never managed to regain its full strength before hitting the Bahamas.
