2 Big Boy Restaurants To Close■ The boy with a burger still will greet diners outside shops in Camilius and North Syracuse, after the outlets in Fayetteville and Liverpool shut.By STEPHANIE GIBBSThe Post-StandardAbout five dozen restaurant workers will lose their jobs Sunday night when two of the four TJ's Big Boy Restaurants in the Syracuse area close. The restaurants at East Genesee Street and Highbridge Road, Fayetteville, and 7398 Oswego Road, Liverpool, each lost more than $100,000 both last year and so far this year, said Gabe Kassab, senior vice president of Elias Brothers Big Boy Restaurants Inc. of Detroit.Elias Brothers has owned the two restaurants about five years, and each is about 25 years old, Kassab said.Kassab blamed poor business on the restaurants* location near closed or partially closed shopping centers.“Those (restaurants) have always been real low-voiume. They've never done very well, Kassab said. “We'd hoped wecould bring them back, but they neverrealty came around. The national economic slump of the past two years also led to the closings, Kassab said. It’s a sign of the times. You take a neighborhood that might have been fairly good, but then you take people who don’thave much of an income, they're going to eat less, he said. The other local TJ's Big Boy Restaurants — in Camilius and North Syracuse — both are turning a profit, Kassab said.Kassab said his company hope9 to absorb about one-quarter of the out-of-work employees into the Camilius and North Syracuse restaurants.Elias Brothers will offer laid-off workers medical coverage, vacation and severance pay, and help in finding new jobs or obtaining unemployment benefits, Kassab said.“We're hoping we can place everyone. That's our concern right now. They’ve been good employees,” Kassab said.Kassab said his company plans to boost profits in the two remaining stores and, if that plan is successful, open new restaurants in this area.“I think we’ll consolidate with the best help, and I think we should do OK,” Kassab said. The Liverpool restaurant has $600,000 in sales last year, but lost $114,000, Kassab said. The Fayetteville restaurant turned $650,000 in sales in 1991, but lost $149,000, he said.Elias Brothers owns 140 TJ's Big Boy Restaurants and franchises another 760 worldwide, Kassab said.
