Channel 4 tries to scare up viewersThe November rating period means that the local TV stations will be trying harder to gain a share of the audience they normally do not have. In these periods, Channel 4 always seems to try a little harder, with mixed results. This month KJAC will present four week-long series on their 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts, beginning with an examination of local ghost legends by reporter D’Anna Stanfield.Slated to run Monday through Friday, the five-part series is a spooky (and sometimes spooked) look at a handful of the area’s ghost stories that have been floating around since the turn of the century. Miss Stanfield leads us through tales of the Saratoga ghost road, the Sara Jane legend in Port Neches and tales of Jean Lafitte’s treasure supposedly buried near Sabine Pass.Instead of taking a typical tongue-in-cheek attitude. Miss Stanfield approaches the story with a genuine wide-eyed innocence — only some of it is intentional, because Miss Stanfield normally is the host of Channel 4’s “Noon Show” and only some times a feature reporter. The best segment is Wednesday’s piece on the Saratoga ghost road. Miss Stanfield interviews two colorful East Texans (one of them Archer Fullingh-am, long-time editor of the Kountze News) about their respective sightings and caps it off with a nighttime standup on the road. As she intones her final lines. D’Anna looks genuinely frightened and you can almost feel the chili creeping up as she signs off, right in the nick of time.“We were out there joking around at first,” she says, “and we had convinced ourselves that thereDennyAngellewas nothing out there. But as Melbourne (Scott, the photographer) and I did the standup bit we heard a strange noise and we both almost jumped out of our skins.”Channel 4 will follow Miss Stanfield's series with “Fighting Dogs,” a look at dogfighting by Russ Murphy, on Nov. 9 through 13; “Going to Sea,” a ride on the Texaco Maryland with Dave Wilson onNov. 16-20; and “Trouble in Paradise.' a serieswhich ran last year but received enough response to warrant a repeat and update on Nov 23-27SPINNING THE DIAL: KBMT, Channel 12, keeps up in the sweeps race with a four-part series this week, “Reading, Writing Wrong,” with coanchor Riek Moore. Moore will examine the reasons why some area students aren’t able to read and write at the level of others — he’ll talk toparents, students «md educators to try and get to the root of the problem. Moore’s report will be shown Tuesday through Friday on the 10 p.m. newscast...Joe DiBacco, general manager of Liberty Cable TV, will be Earl Newliii’s guest on a KJET-AMradio talk show (frequency 1380 on the dial) today from 9 a.m. until noon. Listeners may call and speak to DiBacco on the air, and air any questions, compliments or gripes they may have with Liberty Cable. Newlin, a reporter for the Port Arthur News during the week, works this intriguing little forum every Sunday and has been attracting a steady audience with his easy-going style. Best of all, Newlin has a handful of interesting semi-regular guests, including DiBacco, Richard Stewart of the Houston Chronicle and the ever-popuiar Port Ar-thur News entertainment editor...KAYC’s change to the “music of your life” format has been attracting more compliments than complaints lately. Disc jockey Randy Fuller reports listeners’ calls are “at least 90 percent favorable” in response to the station’s change to programming big band instrumentals and similar types of music in addition to regular programming. KAYC-AM (1250) now plays about six selections per hour . KOLE AM (1340) has shed that gratings semi-country music format in favor of a more Top 40 approach With KAYC, KOLE is the only true pretender to the claim “the station you grew up with” and it’s nice to see them both steering away from the dying “kicker” fad...Oenny Anoelle is the Port Arthur N*w$' entertainment editoriiiDAlCT*You k nowjust wherethe ball is gomg when you readSPOUTSIN !M|i14 Karat CROSSESandassortedSizes and Kinds
