PhilippineLandslideTraps 1,000MANILA, The Philippines lt;AP — Landslides trapped at least 1,000 persons in a mountain pass in central Luzon where storms and flood waters from Typhoon Olga have taken 192 lives in the past 10 days, relief agencies reported today.The National Disaster Control Center said no casualties had yet been reported from the landslide but the people were trapped in at least mo vehicles in the Dalton Pass in the Cara ball Mountains about 110 miles north of Manila. Military helicopters were trying to reach them but were hampered by continued poor weather.Unconfirmed reports said at least five persons have died.The typhoon has been downgraded to a tropica! storm but, it has brought continuous heavy rains and 1.3 million persons have been driven from their homes, the agencies said.Jean Michel Goudstekker, French representative of the League of Red Cross Societies which is here to aid in rescue efforts, took a helicopter tour of central Luzon and said, •‘Landslides have cut off villages. Roads and bridges are destroyed. You cannot go any place by road. For miles and miles there is only water, and that's all.”In one town north of Manila, Calumpit, the water is still up to the roof of the school,” Goudstekker said.The Red Cross said New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain, Finland, Canada and Japan had responded to an international appeal for help with cash or relief goods.U.S. Navy and Air Force helicopters and other aircraft flew 72 mercy missions in the flooded areas, the U.S. Navy said at Subic Bay.The floods were the most severe here since 1972 when 364 persons died and damage was estimated at about $150 million.
