Sly move puts Fox, NFL on city TVsBy RICK BENTLEYCalifornian TV editorThe Fox Network scored a touchdown in December by agreeing to pay $1.6 billion over four years for the broadcast rights to National Football League games. CBS had been carrying the games for 38 years.KMPH-TV, Channel 26, the Fres-no-based Fox affiliate added the extra point this week for localtelevision watchers by leasing the rights to Bakersfield-based low-pow-er channel 58. The Fox affiliate has started delivering a repeat of its signal via the 1,000-watt station.“This will be our way of ensuring that everyone in Bakersfield will be able to see the NFL and all of the Fox programming,” Will Givens, KMPH director of creative services, said.This move knocks KUZZ-TV,Channel 45, out of contention for a Fox affiliation. The local independent had been looking at the possibilities of joining the network, especially after the Fox-NFL agreement.KUZZ officials had no comment Tuesday regarding the KMPHmove.The potential for KUZZ to join the Fox team took focus after the December agreement was signed.When Fox officials inked the deal with the National Football League, network officials assured the league that virtually all of the nation would have access to the Fox signal.
