part company■ Television: Localstation owner still making changes tonew programing format.By Chuck GysiThe Hawk EyeBurlington’s KJMH Channel 26 no longer is a Fox television affiliate, its owner said Fnday.Channel 26 stopped carrying Fox programming about a week ago, according to Steven Hoth, a lawyer who owns the station and also serves as its manager.Programming currently earned on Channel 26 includes a mix from several sources, including Value Vision lt;a home-shopping network based in Minneapolis, Minn.) and Channel America.Hoth declined to discuss programming plans for his station, stating that he expects to makean announcement in about a month “We're developing a new format,” he said from his law office in the same Jefferson Street building that houses the station’s offices and studios.“Things are coming together,” he added in noting that he still is working on the new format.Fox programming still is available on two other stations, HUB Channel 18 in Davenport and KYOU Channel 15 in Ottumwa. In addition, WGEM-TV Channel 10 in Quincy, 111., carries some Fox programming during non-primetime hours. TCI of Eastern Iowa carries KLJB and it now is the only Fox affiliate on its Burlington area system.There are 143 Fox affiliates, a representative for the network’s affiliate relations office in New York City said. That compares to about 200 CBS affiliates, 208 NBC affiliates and 220 ABC affiliates.Channel America is a New York City-based network that has been on the air for more than five years. It originally was established to provide programming for low-power television stations, however, because“the industry never got cooperation from Congress, cable and Wall Street,” the thousands of low-power TV stations originally envisioned by the Federal Communications Commission never materialized, according to Channel America official David Post.Post said that his full-time network has changed its focus to get the best distribution for its programming. It now seeks out full-power stations with good ratings that are carried on cable TV systems.Channel America has 95 affiliates at present. About half its viewers are watching the network on full-power television stations, while about 20 percent are watching it on satellite TV and the balance are viewing it on cable TV or low-power TV' stations, Post said.Some affiliates that use Channel America’s programming fill in some segments with programming of their own, Post said. Some even carrv Fox net-wwork programming in addition to the Channel America programs. *Various programs earned byChannel America include exercise shows in the morning, as well as talk shows, movies and country music. Sports are earned on Saturdays.wPost said the network is just evolving into a new focus for its affiliates. “We want our affiliates to be the hometown channel,” he said. To accomplish that, the network has started hosting some programming, such as its afternoon movie, with a personality. Thus, the program is made participatory because prizes are given away tocallers during breaks. Affiliates have the option to host shows, too. Post said, which helps with the hometown image the network is attempting. The viewers stay tuned during the breaks,” Post said about thegiveaways.The concept wall be added to additional programming this summer and fall, Post said. Blocks of programming will be geared to specific viewers, such as women, Post added.
