Toulouse-Lautrec with a trunk.She’s KamaJa, the Calgary Zoo’s 20-year-old Sri Lankan elephant who is gaining international acclaim as an artist and raising much-needed funds for the zoo.“We never even thought about the marketability when we started all this,” said lead elephant keeper Bob Kam.Zoo staff gave paintbrushes to three elephants to ease their boredom, but only Kamala took to it Since her artwork debuted at a zoo fund-raiser last September, the phones have been ringing off the hook.Original Kamalas now hang across North America and parts of Europe.The mostly 45-by-60 centimetre canvases are priced at $400 to $1,500.So far as many as 60 pieces have been sold. Prints are available for those who can’t afford originals.Customers also get a video of the 2,900-kilogram elephant producing her 15^minute masterpiece.“She has always done glorified trunk painting using mud and I started to wonder what would happen if I gave her a paint brush,” said Kam.
