Shu’s the first to admit16-year-old Cindy Shailo has it too. •established herself as Canada’s “1 like to dive. I feel I canprove myself by diving. And after the Olympics I’ll know who I am,”Strong words for a Gr. 11 student. But this blonde blueeyed girl is no ordinary teenager. Aside from being one of Canada’s best divers — whether or not. she wins an Olympic gold medal — she's the daughter of former Toronto Argonaut halfback Dick Shatto.. A ti d competitive or not, that’s a hard act to follow.Ask her what it’s like being referred to as the daughter of Dick Shatto and slie’U twitch her month. Finally, slie’ll admit something like r “It’s OK now ... We had some pretty good talks .and now I'm proud to be his daughter. But I’m myself too and I’ll prove it at the Olympics.”She adds: “I like to dive. That's all that matters.” Diving for Cindy started eight years ago in the family’s backyard swimming pool in Toronto. She was eight and her father would hold a pole in front of her. Each day he’d raise thut pole and each day she’d clear it.The Shattos were so inv pressed with their daughter’s skill that they sent her to a diving club whore she was taught by experts. It didn’t take long for her to establish herself in the diving world after that.She won a few minor championships, was conscripted by iho national diving team and moved to Winnipeg for a year to be tutored under national coach Don Webb. She followed Webb to Ottawa when he moved a year or so later. Now she trains with him daily in Toronto, where's she’s back home with her parents.Now it’s her father who is having a little trouble keeping a perspective eye on his daughter.The best Hint can be said, is that at times he gets a little over-protective. But that’s to be expected. After all Cindy’s only a 16 year-ohl in Grade 11. She’s also very pretty. Her blue eyes, blonde hair and trim figure are the things sportwriters notice. And these days she's always referred to as “Pretty little Cindy Shatto . , .” But this she says doesn’t bother her:“1 just like tn dive. I don’t care what they write”.Coach Dan Webb talks about her beauty too but on a different level:“Cindy’s got class. She’s a natural diver. What other divers have to learn comes naturally to her. She’s got the style and determination;“On paper, she’s the likeliest for an Olympic gold medal.’*Now that is the kind of talk Chicly likes to hear.
