Roanoke ABC Station Crippled By WalkoutROANOKE (UPI) — Idled by a mass walkout, Roanoke television station WRFT will remain inoperative until an entire new staff is'iTtred the station president said Wednesday.Alex Apostalu, president of ABC affiliate Channel 27, admitted his entire staff had quit in support of former General Manager Andy Peterson who was fired.Apostalu said Peterson made “unreasonable demands” for new equipment and higher pay, but Peterson maintained the station was run in slipshod fashion.The employes walked out Tuesday but the station remained on the air through Tuesdaynight. It failed to sign on Wednesday morning., Jeffrey Hunt, former director of traffic and production, supported Peterson’s claims, saying the station was held together by chewing gum and rubber bands.”Chief Engineer E. W. Davis said the station remained on the air only “with the aid of a 15-watt Christmas bulb and baling wire.” Apostalu said it would take a couple of days to hire a new staff, and a spokesman for WLVA-TV in Lynchburg said his station will provide ABC network coverage for the Roanoke area on Channel 5^ until WRFT resumes broadcasting.
