HawkinsBolstersPiperstiNEW ORLEANS (UPI)-Thc Pittsburgh Pipers, bolstered with the return of high-scoring Connie Hawkins, meet tiie New Orleans Buccaneers at Loyola Field House here tonight in a do-or-die contest lor the Pipers in their bid for the American Basketball Association title.The Pipers are down, 3-2, in the best-of-seven championship playoff series, and a loss tonight means no tomorrow. A victory would move the series to Pittsburgh Civic Arena for tiie final game Saturday night.Pittsburgh coach Vince Caz-7.etta was confident his team would knot the series tonight Svith the return of Hawkins, the ABA’s most valuable player and top scorer.Hawkins missed last Saturday night's game in Pittsburgh which the Pipers lost, 111-108, because of a torn knee tendeon. He worked out with the Pipers Tuesday, the first time since lie suffered the injury in New Orleans nearly a week ago.‘ Hawkins ran lightly and did! some shooting, Cazzctta said.; He appeared to be ready to play. However, lie didn't force things so we will have to wait until he plays to see if he has shaken the injury completely.” Also returning to practice sessions Tuesday was Chico Vaughn, who missed several days of workouts because of a hamstring pull in his right leg.He will have the leg taped tonight to relieve the pain.
