Up to now Pacific Portland has shipped the products from Empire to Redwood City, Calif., to that company's big plasterboard factory. U. S. Gypsum has no such factory nearby, and it is believed it might be interested in setting one up in Reno or Sparks if The connecting road facilities are sufficiently improved to permit trucking. It was said here yesterday that the $2,125,550 price was a good bargain for U, S. Gypsum. In addition to the mill at Empire the company owns the hotel, all the houses for married employes, its own power plant to furnish electricity, and the other utilities. At present about 60 men are employed because the operations have not been going at full capacity during the last few weeks. The normal payroll is about 100 men.In addition to making plaster board, the gypsum is used in all sorts of plaster products and for agricultural purposes. Its market is far spread, and negotiations for its sale have beer under way for some time. Pacific Portland's stock has been going up during the last several days, and it is believed the reported sale was the main reason.Pacific Portland has owned and operated the quarry and mill at Empire for the last 25 years. Prior to that time it operated a similar but smaller project at Mound House, between Carson City and Virginia City. It still owns extensive holdings in California, Oregon and Washington,
