FEMALE DOMINATIONThe conclusions are obvious. At the level of amateur competitive sports, Canada is dominated by The Female of The Species. However, the implications are that Canadian girls excel Canadian boys in their dedication to the rigorous training schedules which are demanded by their individual sports.Don Webb, the eminently successful coach of Canada’s eminently successful diving team, is one athletic instructor who doesn’t accept the above printed implications.Webb was questioned at a news conference in Toronto yesterday, when official announcements were being made in connection with the Canada Cup International Diving Championships which will be held in Winnipeg next month. It was a mere coincidence that Webb was accompanied to the Toronto news conference by his three most successful pupils: Bev Boys, Cindy Shatto and Linda Cuthbert—all girls.A reporter asked: “Do the girls dominate our sports scene because girls are more dedicated and more willing to make personal sacrifices in the pursuit of athletic perfection?’’ “No,” Webb replied promptly. “Girls aren’t ANY MORE WILLING than boys to make personal sacrifices. But, girls are ABLE to make greater sacrifices for their sport.“In Canada, a boy, who is going through school or college with the idea of becoming a doctor or an engineer or entering some other profession, simply can’t afford to take a year away from his books to devote himself 100 per cent to a sport. In our Canadian lifestyle, a girl athlete seldom in inhibited by that same compulsion to complete her formal education in a big hurry. In most Canadian homes, the parents don’t get upset if a daughter spends an extra year or so to finish her schooling.’’DADDY'S LITTLE GIRL'Mr. Webb has a good point, there. Mr. Webb didn didn’t put it into blunt words but, your reporter got the message. Canadian parents, particularly those in comfortable financial circumstances, still subscribe to the “Daddy’s Little Girl” theory of raising their children:Canadian boys are expected to hurry through their schooling, so that they can rush out into the world and become financiallyindependent. There is, however, no great rush for Daddy’s Little Girl to achieve independence. If she wishes to become a great swimmer or a great skier before she reaches adulthood, her parents (usually the father) are willing to devote some of their money— and a good deal of her time—to indulging that commendable desire.
