They had a rope and a post. Amid the greatest excitement thev battered down the irondoors of the court house side of thejail ami poured into the corridor. Sherman Gregory, the Afro-American jailer, and the only person to offer the mob any resistance, was grabbed and ordered to turn over Dickerson.A revolver was placed against his head and he was told that it wouldcost him his life if he didn’t obey instructions. They knew the prisoner was locked in the cell on the secondfloor and they carried Jailer Gregoryuo the stens and commanded him toturn over the prisoner. Sheriff Routzan addressed the mob, saying it was his sworn duty to protect the prisoner, but they evidently knew he did not intend to do it, therefore hewas met with jeers. By this time the doors on the west side of the jailwere forced open and another large crowd entered the corridor. The police were pow’erless. They fought the rioters back, but they kept coming.
