to fill TV news voidTwo companies seekBy PHYLLIS J. ZORNHays Daily NewsBoth KBSH-TV and Eagle Cable Television are hoping to fill the void in local television news.Eagle Communications, the local cable television company, is in the process of developing Eagle Community TV with more local events and announcements in the format.Cliff Walker, station manager at KBSH, is reading resumes and reviewing tapes sent by job applicants with an eye to hiring a news person. The Hays television station in January switched from having a local news anchor with local footage during a segment of the nightly newscast to having local stories filmed by a KBSH cameraman and read by Wichita anchors. The local cameraman recently took a different job.“Larry Calvary has taken a job in the retail fast food sector as a marketing director,” Walker said. “We are in a search to replace him and get back to our daily coverage of news.”Walker said the station’s change to using Wichita anchors earlier this year was an idea contemplated by KBSH for more than a year, which was prior to Calvary’s term as news anchor. But a new reporter could bring about a return to news delivered by a local anchor, he said.“It has yet to be determined how we’re going to approach it with the local segment,” Walker said. The recently adopted format ofsending local footage to Wichita and having Wichita anchors read the news has proved difficult, Walker said. He expects a return to local news read by a local anchor.Meanwhile, Gary Shorman, president of Eagle Communications, said the cable company has signed contracts with KMA Productions of Hays to produce all programming for Eagle Community TV.The new service will feature local announcements, local advertising and, within the next few months, local news segments. The community news being envisioned isn’t limited to the traditional news, weather and sports delivered by anchors, Shorman said. Options like community leaders discussing local issuesand more local events being broadcast are being contemplated, he explained.“I don’t think anybody can say that’s a bad situation if there is more local information in Hays,” Shorman said. “We feel community television can be a whole lot more than just a 5-minute news segment.”Eagle Community TV will be broadcast on cable channel 14 in Hays, Ellis, Russell and Wa-Keeney.Eagle, under its former corporate structure of KAYS Inc., once owned the Hays, Goodland, Dodge City and Wichita TV stations.KMA previously produced its own news segment on cable channel 14. Its ownership includes Hays City Commissioner Sunell Koerner.
