The show serves up the misadventures of a group of teens with their first jobs and first taste of freedom.YTV series takes humourous look at teenagers on the jobBY NELSON WYATTONTREALGiancarloA JFl\/l ^a*ta^iano saYs he likes meatyXVXroles so it’s appropnate that he’s one of the stars of Fries With That?, a new YTV teen comedy set in a burger joint. He plays Ben Shaw, a power-hungry assistant manager who ndes herd over a feisty group of workers who apply themselves as much to driving him nuts as they do their jobs. It’s not that they don’t like Ben, Caltabiano said in an interview. “They do like him. It’s that power struggle — the assistant manager and the employ-CCS.“They’ll do anything to slack off and have less work whereas Ben wants to be as efficient as possible and most of the time he makes everything else less efficient.”Fries With That? premieres on YTV on Apnl 4 at 6:30 p.m. The network has such confidence in the high-energy program it has already ordered a second season’s worth of episodes and those begin filming March 9.In the first episode, burger-slinger Pattie tries to rally the staff of Bulky’s to take on rival fast-food joint Chunky’s in a softball game. The trick is the Bulky’sgang have to train behind Ben’s back.Pattie is played by newcomer Jeanne Bowser, daughter of George Bowser of the noted Bowser and Blue comedy duo.“She’s really competitive and athletic,” Jeanne Bowser said of her character. “She’s kind of like Monica ofFriends, really driven and really buddieswith the guys.”May fie, but Pattie seems like she’d give Monica a run for her money based on Bowser’s antics in putting together a team in the first episode. One of Pattie’s mam foils is Tess, played by another newcomer, Anne-Marie Baron. Tess is, to put it charitably, a bit of a ditz.“She’s the one that’s always a little bit off but that’s really funny,” Bowser said of the character.Bowser, whose first job as a teen was as a pool lifeguard, said she thought the audience could easily relate to the show.“There’s the first job aspect, there’s the teenager aspect, there’s the fact that we’re friends, there’s the fact that we’re dating and that we have other things going on at the same time.”And there’s the fact that while lighthearted, the show doesn’t talk down to its audience.“This could be for people way older and 1 think that’s true and that’s good.”Paul Risacher, one of the tween-targeted show’s producers, is enthusiastic about the group of young actors appearing in Fries, which also stars Morgan Kelly as Alex and Stefanie Buxton as Robyn.“I can’t say enough about the cast,” said Risacher, who has worked on such diverse programs as the teen comedy Radio Active and the gnm CBC biker series The Last Chapter. They’re wonderful to work with and then you see the results you get and they’re just so wonderfully talented. You start seeing things happen that aremagic. While Risacher said he can’t take credit for knowing the ins and outs of how a burger joint works, Caltabiano does bnng some experience to the table. After a stint as a stockboy in a convenience store, he worked as a busboy and a waiter in his grandfather’s Montreal pizzena. In fact, he used the experience to help him play Ben.“He’s based on my grandfather a little bit, with the pulling of the pants and the tie,” Caltabiano said with a laugh.“In all my acting experiences, I’ll try to grab something from real life,” Caltabiano said, noting he could see some aspects where the art of his new show met the real life of his old restaurant job.“It’s kind of similar,” he said. “Every time I read a scnpt and an incident happens, I’m like, ‘oh, gosh, I remember that incident and I can use itnow.’“I was a waiter and it was fun. I’ve talked to a lot of actors and they don’t like waitenng. I actually didn’t mind it. It was pretty cool.”He even said he wouldn’t mind doing it again if he had to, quickly pointing out, however, that waitmg tables is “not as fun as acting.”/CPBobbiSchramPhysiotherapist20-1015 26th St.727-4753www.westtit.caPhysiotherapy Sports Injury ClinicIKBookmartFor the Reader and tinCollector,Phone (M 725-1141Often Mon. - Sot. fO - ft
