Judge OKs Owens’ buy of TV outletFCC still must approveBy STEVE E. SWENSONCalifornian staff writerFRESNO — A federal bankruptcy judge approved the sale of KDOB-TV Channel 45 in Bakersfield to country music star and radio station owner Buck Owens, brother of the current owner, Dorothy Owens,The sale, however, needs one more approval — that of the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C., where opposition to Buck Owens buying the station has been lodged by four other television stations serving Bakersfield. The FCC approval will be much tougher to achieve than the routine action Wednesday before Judge Brett Dorian, who wondered why four attorneys showed up when he called the matter on his calendar. No one opposed the sale and the matter took only two minutes.Dorian’s approval of an agreement among the attorneys representing major creditors of the station also included a provision allowing Buck Owens to loan up to $550,000 to KDOB to keep it operating pending the FCC consideration. The loan of up to $550,000 would be in addition to a $60,000 loan approved by Dorian and the creditors in December. Those loans would have less priority for repayment than the amounts owed to the major creditors — Union Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Sony Corp. and seven businesses, known as programmers, that sell shows to the station. The agreement provides that Buck Owens, who also owns radio stations KUZZ AM-FM in Bakersfield, will pay $4.5 million to buy the station before April 15. That deadline is subject to any further extensions approved by the bankruptcy court. Please turn to OWENS / B2
