HealthworkersratifycontractA majority of about 1,200 support staff workers in 22 Manitoba hospitals and nursing homes yesterday voted in favor of accepting two-year collective agreements, ending their 3%.week strike.Eugene Kostyra, health care co-ordinator for the Canadian Union of Public Employees, said the workers are expected to return to their jobs throughout the province early next week.Kostyra told a press conference yesterday union negotiators pelieved the package proposed earlier thlSf week by Manitoba Health Organizations Inc. represented the Institutions’ final offer.While the contracts provide job security for only the first year of the two-year agreement, they call for average wage increases of 27.5 per cent over two years. Under the agreements the average top pay rate is about $6.40 an hour for the nurses’ aides, orderlies, and housekeeping staff.The rate is less than the approximately $7-an-hour rates fixed under recent agreements with the Health Sciences Centre and Grace General Hospital.ReclassificationBut the MHO agreements provide $400,000, or about three per cent of payroll, for job classification changes for an unspecified number of workers.The HSC and Grace pacts provide job security in case employers contract work out to a private firm.The MHO pacts provide job protection for ail Brandon General Hospital workers with at least 18 months service and no contracting out of any institution until after April 30, 1981, when the first year of the two-year agreements ends.But after that the contracts provide no specific job guarantee except at Brandon General.Brian Siegner, MHO’s assistant executive director of employee relations, said workers have protection through the institutions’ promise to make “every reasonable effort” to find jobs in their institutions for displaced workers and through severance pay pruvid-See SUPPORT page 4
