University preparing new museum spaceThe Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, will relocate to a free-standing building of its own at the University of Pennsylvania.Architects Henry Smith-Miller and Laurie Hawkinson have been selected to design the rehabilitation of ICA's new home, an industrial building near the corner of 36th and Walnut streets in Philadelphia.Philadelphia will acquire a contemporary art museum with almost 10,000 square feet of flexible gallery space for major exhibitions or several concurrent smaller exhibitions, able to accommodate a range of works from intimate photographs to monumental scale environmental pieces.Renovation is scheduled to begin in the fall of 1988, with opening of the new museum plannedfor the fall of 1989.Prize winnerNEW YORK - Xavier Gonzalez, muralist, draftsman and sculptor, has received Columbia University's Brevoort-Eickemey-er Prize.Gonzalez, 89, of New York City, received a certificate and $1,000. The prize is awarded every five years to an artist selected by the National Academy of Design in New York.Piano preferenceNEW YORK - In the United States, 57 million people play one or more musical instruments.Of those, 20.6 million play the piano, making it the most popular musical instrument, according to the American Music Conference. Steinway Sons has been making pianos since 1853 and has sold more than 499,000.
