I 20 Fri., June It, 1993KUZZ television leaves Oildale fStation joins other Buck Owens properties on Sillect AvenueBy RICK BENTLEYCalifornian TV editorv« After being a fixture in Oildale since going on the air in 1988, KUZZ-TV, Channel 45, will finish relocating its operation next week to the Buck Owens Building on Sillect Avenue. The change of address brings the television operation into the same building as Buck Owens’ other media operations, which include KUZZ radio and various shopper magazines.Dorothy Owens, general manager of the local independent television station, greeted the move with mixed emotions. The facility has been the home for the local station since its launch, creating a sentimental attachment But the general manager knew this was the bestLose Fat?‘I've loa 39 pounds,4 nchrs m the wa«t.move for the operation.“When we moved in here, we had to make do with what we had. For the new facility, we were able to take into consideration all of the particular needs of operating a television station from electrical to air conditioning,” Owens said as she walked through the facility she soon would be leaving. The first home for the television station originally was built as a motion picture house. In 1989, the facility was transformed into a recording studio and served that purpose until just before the TV station launched.Even though the TV station has called the facility home for only a few years, that did not diminish the amount of equipment, supplies and materials that needed to be transported while continuing to supply a TV signal to viewers. To make the switch as easy as possible, the moving process had been divided into three phases with the final wave moving to the new home next week.Owens stressed that the television station would not go off the air during the move, because equipment had been shifted in phases to assure the signal would not be interrupted. While next week will mark the final phase of the move, the actual plans for the shift have been in progress for months. The new home had to be adjusted to be able to house the new residents.Such growth was always a consideration since the Buck Owens Building went up and little additional construction was needed to create space for the TV equipment Several walls were moved and some similar operations merged.Of all the work, the biggest construction change was the loss of half of the employees’ gymnasium, which became the TV station’s library. The technical operations of the TV station will be housed on the ground floor. A maze of control rooms, master control and the videotape library constitute the largest portion of the TV area in the building.FELIX AO AMO I THE CAUFCMWMANSatefite receiving cfish in new location behind KUZZ buttingAlso on the ground floor will be a 608-square-foot studio area for local production.Departments such as accounting, traffic and management will be housed on the second floor. Sales personnel for the TV, radio and print operations will be located in a central area on that floor. One of the biggest tasks in preparing for the move was setting upthe huge receiving dish. The new unit — which sits inside a pool-size hole behind the building — has dramatically increased the station’s capabilities for picking up material fed to the independent via satellite. As to the how smoothly the move had been going, Owens stressed it had been a “big, big project,” but the staff had been working closely together to assure the move went off without a glitch.
