Donnie and the Rock to open Tuesday’s showGrammy award winner and Academy Award nominee Survivor will bring music from its five albums, including its blockbuster “Eye of the Tiger,” to Joplin for a concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Hall.The opening act will Donnie and the Rock, a Kansas City-area band which has performed at several Joplin area nightclubs.Survivor boasts a 1984 singles chart hit, The Moment of Truth,” from the film The Karate Kid” and the 1982 biggest-selling single, Eye of the Tiger, from the movie Rocky III.Members of the band are Marc Droubay, drums; Stephan Ellis, bass; Jimi Jamison, lead vocals; Jim Peterik, keyboards, guitar and vocals, and Frankie Sullivan, lead guitar and vocals.The band was formed in Chicago in 1978 by Peterik and Sullivan. Peterik had formed a band, the Ides of March, when he was 14 and wrote its million-selling single Vehicle in 1970. He released a solo album Don’t Fight the Feeling” in 1976. Sullivan was a member of a popular Chicago band, Mariah, before Survivor. Along with singer David Bickler, they played nightclubs and sent out demo records until landing a contract with Scotti Brothers Records and releasing a debut album in 1980.The following year Survivor intrxiuced two new' members, Ellis and Droubay, Los Angeles natives. The next album, “Premonition, got the band airplay and road performances with the band Triumph. It was that album that won them interest from Sylvester Stallone.Stallone sent the band the first 10 minutes of the movie Rocky III” and asked the band to write the theme song. The result was Eye of the Tiger,” the title cut of the band's third album.The song hit No. 1 on Billboard magazine's chart andMembers of Survivor are Stephan Ellis, bass; Jim Peterik, keyboards, Jimi Jamison, lead vocals, and Frankie Sullivan, lead guitar and vocals, and Marc Droubay, drums.sold more than 2.5 million copies in the United States. It also hit the top position in England, Canada, South Africa, Australia, Norway, Sweden and Greece, and went to the top five in France, Italy, Finland and Denmark.It won Survivor a Grammy award for best rock vocal performance, captured an Academy Award nomination for best song, and won awards from Solid Gold, the People’s Choice Awards, Cashbox and the National Association of Record Merchandisers (NARM).Survivor followed with a six-month tour of the U.S., and in 1983 released “Caught in the Game,” a record again produced by Sullivan. On the heels of that album and a subsequent tour, Survivor headed into the studio with a new singer and a new producer.The singer is Jamison, a former member of Cobra. The soundtrack single, The Moment of Truth, with J amison, hit the singles charts in the summer of 1984.The band then released the album Vital Signs,” produced by Ron Nevison, who hadn’t worked with Survi-- ' ft *vor since the debut album. Vital Signs” also contains some tracks with Jefferson Starship singer Mickey Thomas and keyboardist Peter Wolf.Donnie and the Rock band members and their former hometowns are Donme Miller, Coffeyville, Kan.; KurtCarow, Atlanta, Ga.; Lance Romance, Independence, Kan.; Vince Kirk, 01athe( Kan., and Randy Jordan, Lamar.Miller is the lead vocalist and plays guitar; Carow is the keyboardist; Romance is the drummer; Jordan plays bass, and Kirk is a guitarist.The band has performed locally at the King of Clubs, the former Missouri Mining Co., and at Sgt. Peppers. Galena, Kan. Donnie and the Rock currently is recording some of it’s original music on demos and is negotiating a recording contract.Tickets for the show are $12 in advance and $13 the day of the show at Memorial Hall and Bob Massey Music.
