Alber*° ecomes ,irst tropical storm of hurricane season; landfall expected in LouisianaAP and staff reports the storm, because everv time we oln star nf ™ ___1 . i _ . ..AP and staff reports.MIAMI — A tropical depression that dumped up to 10 inches of rain on western Cuba grew in the Gulf of Mexico Friday into IVopical Storm Alberto, the first named storm of the hurricane season, forecasters said.AThe people who live along the nprth Gulf Coast, we want them to listen to the radio, to monitorthe storm, because every time we have a tropical storm in the Gulf ... it could gain some strength,” said National Hurricane Center specialist Lixion Avila.“We don’t know if it’s going to become a hurricane,” Avila said, “We still think it’s going to be 50 mph or a maybe a 60 mph tropical storm.”The increasingly organizedcluster of thunderstorms car ried maximum winds of 40 mph, just 1 mph above the threshold where a tropical depression becomes a named tropical storm.In Galveston, the emergency operations center opened at 8 a.m. Friday to continuously monitor the storm.Galveston County emergency coordinator Don Wisemanadvised residents to keep a watchful eye on the storm as it develops in the Gulf.The Galveston County emergency management operation center is not open, but workers will monitor the storm during the holiday weekend, Wiseman said.“We’re in stage one, where we’re aware and making people aware of what’s going on,” hesaid, “If we heed to be active, we’ll fire up the BOC.”The center could be open by Sunday if the storm continues on its present course, Wiseman said. Information about evacuations would be issued through the television and radio broadcasts, Wiseman said.At 10 p.m., the center of the storm was centered near latitude24 degrees north latitude and 87.3 degrees west longitude, or about 365 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River.It was moving northwest near 8 mph, and it was possible the storm might slowly strengthen ■within the next day.Forecasters said f the storm continues on its present course, it would hit in central Louisiana.
