Officials debate water fountain’s fateBy Bonnie BridgeStaff Writer_City officials are trying to decide whether to spend thousands of dollars to repair an intricately-carved water fountain in Central Park.The 78-year-old Waddell Fountain has been badly damaged by weather and vandals.“It’s a sandstone structure, and sandstone doesn’t weather very well at all,” City Centre parks superintendent Wayne Pauls said last week.“People have climbed on it and broken chunks off, but a lot of the damage is just natural decay.”A replica of a Scottish monument to writer Sir Walter Scott, the fountain is a former Wirutipegger's tribute to his dead wife. Emily Margaret Waddell stipulated in her will that if her husband Thomas remarried, he should donate $10,000 to the city to build the fountain.The city doesn’t know yet how much the repairs will cost, but they could be expensive, said Roman Christiuk of the real estate branch.The fountain was declared an historical site in 1988, so it can’t be tom down.Barry Yanchyshyn, historical projects coordinator, says it’s Imped the restored fountain could become a point of pride and help revitalize the surrounding neighborhood.Central Park is one of the city’s oldest parks, and the restoration of the fountainTorepair or not?
