Woman suffrage was discussed from every point of vittw for more than ten hours In the House today. At the close of the debat* the proposed constitutional amendm* nt giving nation-wide suffrage to womenw8 rejected by the overwhelming voteof 174 to 204.The suffragists fell 78 men short of thenecessary two-thirds vote, with 3* members not voting This vote, coming so soon after President Wilson's firm statement that the women should carry their fight to the States instead of to Congress, marks the second defeat fur the suffrage cause in the national legislature within a year. On March 19 last an equal suffrage constitutional amendment proposed by Senator Chamberlain of Oregon received a vote of .T.** to .*4 In the Senate, securing a hare majority, but falling of the necessary two-thirds.Ffowever. the suffrage workers are notdisheartened.Dr Anna Howard Shaw, President ofthe National Suffrage Aasociatlon. saidalter the adjournment: I am not gratified, but the vote wasbetter than I had expected.
