WEOL drops Albom, picks up HannitySteve FogartyThe Chronlcfe-TelegramAlbom is nut and Hannity is in.In the nothing-Jasts-forever world of radio, Detroit-based talk radio personality Mitch Albom has been dropped by Elyria radio station WEOl^-AM 930 in favor of Sean Hannity conservative talk show host of “The Sean Hannity Show.Hannity will be heard weekdays from 3 to 6 p.m., according to Craig Adams, WEOL's operations manager, who said the decision to select Hannity’s program came after the station was informed that Albom's show was no longer going to be distributed nationallyHeard from 3 to 5 p.m. weekdays on WEOL, The Mitch Albom Show ivas syndicated nationally by Detroit radio station WJR-AM 760, Albom’s flagship station which originated his show.WJR informed WEOL officials in December that they were nn longer going to distribute Albom’s show nationally because so few stations were still on the network, said Adams. “They had not sold any national advertising for it and were losing a major portion of its audience.The programming switch, which went into effect Tuesday, was not made by the station itself, according to Adams.Prior to being handled by WJR, Albom’s program was distributed by ABC Radio, which also distributes the Hannity program. WEOL had carried Albom's show —- which mixed celebrity interviews with topical discussions of current news and political events - for three years.When the station considered possible programming to replace Albom, officials made the decision to go with Hannity based in large part on his growing national popularity.He’s the number two most popular talker in the nation, he covers live breaking news, which other hosts don’t always do, and he was available in this market, said Adams. We looked at different network services and felt this was the best way for us to grow our audience and advertising.”Hannity is ranked second most popular conservative political radio talk show host behind Rush Limbaugh, according to a survey taken by Talkers magazine, a monthly publication devoted to the talk radio industry.Sean Hannity is carried by more than 500 stations while Limbaugh is on just over (500, said Adams. “Limbaugh's estimated audience is 15 million, while Hannity has an estimated nationwide audience of 13 million,”Known for his ouI spoken conservative views on politics and social issues, Hannity is the second conservative radio personality to be picked up by the station in less than a year. WEOL began airing “The Glenn Beck Show from 9 a.m. to noon in May 2005.The popularity of conservative radio talk programs is clearly demonstrated by the fact that a 2005 Talkers Magazine survey was dominated by personalities including Michael Savage, Dr Laura Suhlessmger, Bill O’Reilly, Michael Medved and G. Gordon LiddyNotable exceptions in the top 25 included Howard Stern, tied at No. 4 with Schlessinger (Stern recently departed commercial airwaves for XM Satellite radio); consumer advocate Clark Howard at No. 7 (also carried by WEOL from 1-3 p.m.); and sports talker Jim Rome at No. 10, according io the magazine’s Website.The lone liberal talker io make the survey was A1 Franken, who ranked 26th,
