Durham woman wins Eno River awardIn a decade which has witnessed the nation's water resources become polluted and its free-flowing rivers dammed in order to produce hydro-electric power, itis warming to know that an individual can make a difference.Margaret Nygard of Durham is one such person.She will receive the first ever Alexander ('aider Conservation Award from The Conservation Fund, based inAlexandria, Va., for her efforts to preserve North Carolina’s Eno River Valley.For those w ho don't know, the Eno runs through nearby Orange County and is one of the last undeveloped stretches of water in central North Carolina.Mrs. Nyard was a founder in 1965 of the Association for the Preservation of the Eno River Valley, a group of local conservationists, business leaders and government officials As aresult of the asssociation'sefforts, N.C adopted a plan in 1973 to establish Eno River State Park As part of the plan. 2,913 acres were acquired for preservation along the river. In later years, Mrs. Nygard worked to acquire additional land gifts, raise money and help the state obtain matching Federal funs. Since then an additional 2,078 acres have been acquired and saved from the bulldozers' blade.The award is named for Alexander Calder, former retired chairman of Union Camp Corporation. a timber company which started the awards program.Mrs. Nygard has received praise for her work in preserving the Eno River from many individuals including Patrick Noonan, president of the Conservation Fund, and Gilbert Grosvenor, president of the National Geographic Society.In a recent issue of Friend of Wildlife, the publication of the N.C. Wildlife Federation. Grosvenor said, “She recognized the need to bring civic leaders and the business community together to work in harmony to save a criticalarea.”Other individuals and groups who voted on the award included Cecil Andrus. Governor of Idaho and former U.S. Secretary of Interior,John Dierdorff of Business Week magazine. Mrs. David Rockefeller, the Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Andrew Sigler, chairman and CEO of Champion International Corporation, and Gene Cartledge, chairman of Union Camp Corporation.The Eno River not only provides wetlands habitat for river species, but the land surrounding the river is a habitat for many species of game including deer and wild turkeys. The Eno is also a favorite channel for canoeists and campers and hikers.
