KZLN gets extra day serviceSAN BENITO — Valley public television station KZLN has received a one-day extension from Central Power Light Co. for its service.CPL, owed a three-month bill of about $19,000 by the station, was expected to shut off Channel 60 s power Thursday night but postponed that until at least Friday night, said Philip Freedman, KZLN director of development and planning Freedman said whether the station will be able to pay its bill before the new deadline and remain on the air won t be known until Fridav, but “because of thewoutpouring of public support, we feel confident.”Offers have come from persons willing to collect money door to door and donate portions of proceeds from events. Brownsville s Sunrise Mall, for example, willprovide a breakfast and half hour musical revue for children at 8:30 a m. Saturday. Tickets are available at the mall office and KZLN studios for $3.50.A station phone that was disconnected last week was still out of service this morning.A professional fund-raising firm from Waco has approached KZLN about using its service, and PBS has cleared the idea.Santa Rosa High School collected $305.68 for KZLN and has challenged other schools to do the same Melinda Moreno. 8, sent $1 to show her support for “favorite program Sesame StreetOther help has taken the form of a pan full of pennies and a note from those who said thev would cancel plans to buy a new TV set, if public TV was not available.Almost $5,000 was received in the mail this week.Though not the large monies the station requires, “these small amounts are the community, Freedman said “They're doing it because they want to ... they feel that we are a necessity in the Valley.“The community doesn't want to see it (KZLN) die, and I don t think thev 11 let it,' Freedman said,Freedman added that recent troubles with the transmitter may result in the station's being off the air at times in the next few daysKZLN almost ceased broadcasting Saturday with a threatened full staff walkout The staff did return Monday after a special Saturday night meeting of KZL.Ys board, which accepted President Francisco Briones voluntary resignation and appointed chief engineer John Toland as the new station manager
