This celebrated instrument was made by Antemius Stradivarius inCremona in the year 1710, in what is known as the ‘‘golden period” of the great violin-maker’s life.It formerly belonged to Charles Jean Oancla. French virtuoso and professor at the Conservatoire ofParis, who died in 1907. Subsequently it was acquired by Rodman Wanamaker and was one of the instruments which he intended to usein his own symphony orchestra. After his death all his instruments were purchased by the Rudolph Wurlitzer company. Itstone is said to be unusually luscious even for a Stradivarius.The price paid was not disclosed by Nathan Milstein. Inquiries made at Wurlitzer’s disclosed the fact that the price was the usual one for a Stradivarius of this class. Jay C. Freeman, curator of the- WurlitzerCollection, said that the top sum for a Stradivarius in the United States, as far as he knew, was 375.000 but that higher prices had been paid ui Europe within the last 10 yeairs.
