inatlKIAK-AM to be soldto Washington firmANCHORAGE lt;AP An agreement has been reached for the sale of Big Country Radio’s three Alaskan radio stations, including one in Fairbanks, to the Washington state concern that operates a country radio station in Everett.Bob Fleming of Anchorage, one ot three partners in the Alaska operation, says he anticipates no problem gaining Federal Communications Commission approval of the transfer While no fixed price has been set, officials say the purchase price will bein excess of $3 million.Big Country Radio operates KYAK AM and KGOT-FM in Anchorage and KIAK-AM in Fairbanks. Fleming’s partners are Glen Miller and RichardCruver, both of Seattle.Prospective purchaser Marty Hamstra of KWYZ in Everett, Wash , said Tuesday that FCC approval of the agreement probably will take five toseven months He said the Washington station is “verv much like KYAK in Anchorage.Our‘intention would be to remain country, but with greater concentration on news coverage, which is sort of ourforte.”Hamstra said he and his partner in the Washington operation, Bob Brown, are looking forward to the Alaska challenge. A Seattle lawyer, George Akers, would be a minority partner in the agreement, he saidHe said of the decision to move north: •‘My family’s been up there (in Anchorage) for about a dozen years and they’ve sort of beat on our heads and said. ‘You ought to come to the great part of the world ’ ”“We believe in the long-term future of the Anchorage and Fairbanks areas we re prepared to invest in it,” he said, adding that he plans to move north when FCC approval is granted“We re community activists and get involved in community issues,” Hamstra said. “We have a great sense of social responsibility not just the public service that the FCC speaks ot, but in the biblical sense of foot-washers ”“We’re a very, very small company. We’re not big New York money or anything like that,” he said “We'll have to work very hard to continue the success that Bob Fleming already has built up.”
