Upstairs gives counselingnoldFajOiFeorof ?lt;capiTtirearreceBy FRAN K J, LUCERO, JR,LAS VEGAS — Las Vegas residents and New Mexico Highlands University students lake ncile Upstairs is here, and it may be for yon.Upstairs, or the Las Vegas CampusCommunity Ministry Inc., up the stairs at 115 Bridge St., is an ecumenical mission of three local protestanl churches, and deals mainly with social and personal problems of the people Lhrough various programs, counseling, and religious instruction.It started back in 1907, when three local pastors, Robert Plagge, Don Alexander ami Jeff Butcher, founded Ibe Las Vegas Campus Ministry Inc., an organization with the same purpose as Upstairs, but catering exclusively to Highlands students.In 1S72, an evaluation conference was held by the founders, and they decided lo extend the mission’s sen'ices to include the community. During the same year, the present building which houses the LVCCM was acquired with a grant of 515,000 from the United Presbyterian Church, U.S.A.From its beginning until last year, there was no full time minister at LVCCM. Then, in February of 1975, enough funds were obtained Lo hire someone. The Revs. David and Fran Buss, a husband and wife team, got the job and took over the operation of Upstairs.Rev Buss said the statement of mission of LVCCM Is to nourish persons lo grow Into wholeness in Jesus Christ, to communicate the Christian faith in the university community and the community at large, to enable persons in the discovery of self-worth in order to make responsible decisionsabout themselves and their society, and to take reconciling aclion that moves toward a more fully human community which is committed to freedom and trulh, brotherhood and sisterhood, jusLice, peace, and personal integrity. Detrtk WirniacLCarnival, the Caribbean version uf Mardi Gras, is one of the year’s most festive occasions on the island of Aruba. The Grand Carnival Parade, the climax of a month of activities, is scheduled for Feb. 29 in 1976.and Bible study.Programs underway at the Upstairs include personal counseling and pastoral services, a program intended to give privaLe help to persons who need help with the problems with life; a weekly Bible study; a support group of rape victims which meets weekly and is designed to give them a chance to share the fears, pain or guilt they felt as victims; a women’s group which discusses the challenges and problems of being a woman; and assertiveness training workshups, lo help people to stand up for themselves.Counseling is also available.A resource library, which includes books on the women's movement, Third World books and resources on Liberation Theology, is available. The Upstairs building is also used by other groups wishing to hold meetings.Sunday night dinners and music sessions are held each week. The price of the no-meat dinner is 50 cents, and according Lo some who have eaten there, a better meal Tor the price can’t be found.A project is underway to con sir net a solar heating unit for the building. People from the community and the university who are interested in ' solar energy and who have some knowledge of the process are planning the project.LVCCM is governed by a board which consists of representatives from three local churches — The United Methodist, The United Presbyterian, and the Christian (Disciples of Christ) — and six representatives from the community.The Upstairs is open Sunday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5p.m., and in the evenings for programs. Coffee, tea, color television, books, chess and other games are available for all Vegas residents and Highlands students.
