Atherton, 74, died last Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George H. fright of Deerfield, after a lingering illness. He was born in Gill, the son of Zara and Mary Phillips Atherton, and a de-scendant of the Rev.* Hope Atherton\of Hatfield, one of the pioneer ministers of the Connecticut valley. Mr. Atherton served in the 10th Massachusetts regiment during the civil war and lost his arm in the battle of Fair Oaks. After the war he lived most of the time in Turners Falls, although he spent some time in Greenfield, Springfield and Florida, where he was superintendent in a phosphate mine. He was actively interested in politics, being a stanch democrat. He was for several years superintendent of streets in Turners Falls and served' as chairman of the .selectmen of Montague, a member of the state legislature and delegate to a presidential convention in Chicago. He married Alma Bascom of Gill,who died less than a year ago. Besides Mrs. Wright, he. leaves two other daughters, Miss Winnie L, Bascom of North Abington and Miss Marion Atherton, teacher of English in the Turners Falls high school, two brothers, Alonzo and William of Gj 11; one -sis'bcr.,;•«Mrs;• • € aryHaH ‘of Vojrnon, V*t., * and three grandChildren, Alma, Ella and - Pomeroy Wright of Deerfield..Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Wright Friday afternoon, Rev.
