And it will continue to do so for the next six days. This week will attempt to outdolast week’s festivities in point of vividness, variety and number.Specific instances of the period’s gayety are the debutante functions, the large balls (which.have been particularly numerous this season)'. ‘94and the less formal dances and theatre-parties.Perhaps the exhausting effects of daily parties have been overestimated; or perhaps the young woman of this generation is morefhardened to them than her mother. At any rate, you will find fewto admit that they are tired of “going out.” But buttonhole the“dancing man”; draw him into a convenient alcove and pin him downto sincerity. What will his answer be? Another story, indeed! Atpresent the majority of young men who have ended their collegecourses have become figures, major or minor, in the business, professional and financial worlds. Candor will force them to confess(provided officials of their firms are not about) that they are vergingon that state so graphically described as ‘‘all in.”“It’s all right for the ladies,” sighed one youth last week. “Theycan sleep until noon, getting up, fresh and energetic, in time for theirteas, their matiness and their nightly dances. Can we do that?HardhBut obligations,.sccial ones, are obdurate; especially sincemost of the more elaborate of the current functions have been on thesocial calendar since October. It is amusing (and slightly pathetic) tonote at this juncture the brave plans made at the close of last seasonby those who had the welfare of our youth at heart. “Too many lateparties,” was the cry. “Too prolonged. Too unwholesome. Let usstop having the orchestra play the final number at five in the morning, and send themhome at99one.” This valiant resolution has hardlyfunctioned in the way intended for it. For this season balls commencelater and last longer, if possible, than ever before.Part of this tardiness of entertainment may be due to the popularand almost omnipresent, theory that it is bad form to arrive at a ballbefore half past eleven or a quarter to twelve. Even participants intheatre parties, who might be expected to rush from their boxes tothe waxed floor, to expedite matters for their hostess, often linger inthe hotel lobby that they may not offend against the unwritten, thoughpowerful, canon of tallte. This is largely due, of course, to the deeply-rooted objection to “being the first.” Yet it seems rather a wastefulphilosophy.Slogan of Young MenAs conditions now are, supper is not wowed until half-past one or two o’clock; the «ldors leave at about three, and the ballroom is from then on dedicated to the younger and sprightlier members of the dancing set. But the cry for a good Samaritan who will change all this is even now being heard from several popular and intelligent young men whose prominence in social and club circles gives them the right to protest. “Earlier parties and prompter suppers” is their double slogan. The point is aptly made that today, when so rpany traditions are sufferingdiscard, there might as well be one ortwo more beneficial innovations. One instance of shifting customs is the present day tendency on the part of the men to do away with evening dress in its strictest, sense, ’he despised dinner coat is coming into its own again, most of .fhe dancing crowd preferring itsample lines to the restrictions of the swallowtail. The soft hat. too, is gaining ascendancy ov^jtthe cylindrical one of precedenfe,i Apparently this increasein informality was not merely a passing fancy of the war. Tt seems to be here for a long time. Now and then some father takes a son to task for this loosening of the social bonds; here and there a mother may be found to chide her children on the same score. But it is significant that, at a recent ball, precisely ten coats of severe cut could be observed. The rest were dinner jackets.Preceded by the customary dinners, imposing -balls will lead the week’s entertainment. roster. Theatre parties as a sort of cocktail to the more important frolics will - play their usualpart. Chief among the halls will be thit of the Charlton Yarnalls tomorrow night, when their daughter. The Charles E.Coxes are to give a large hall for their debutante daughter. Miss Jane Gordon C'oxr. Besides this event, there will be many, many dinner-dances on Friday night, every inch of dancing room in the hotels having been engaged. The Bellevue-Stratford rose gardens have been set as the background for three separate dances.A foretaste of this week’s activit.v was given last Wednesday by the bail with Dr. and Mrs. Thomas G. Ashtouas host and hostess, and at which ,the,r debutante daughter, Miss Antle Ashton, was the guest of honor. Miss Ashton is remarkable, even for a “deb.” Not only does she appear to advantage on the ballroom floor; but she Is a vivid figure at horse shows, having taken part in many exhibitions in the East. Blue ribbons in plenty have fallen to her share. At the Ashton affair poinsettias, fern and Christmas trees were used in the decorative scheme. It was declared by many a superlatively brilliant and beautiful event.Strawbridge DanceAttractive Fe a litreCheston, 4th, Mr. Samuel Wagner and I Fh nrloQ F FilYP FifillMr. Henry Pemberton.
