Costume LibraryEstablished AtStephens CollegettThe establishment of a historical costume library at Stephens College has been announced by Mrs. Myra Jervey Hoyle, director of the nationally famous fashion program there.Contributions of all types of ladies wearing apparel are being sought for the collection, accord-j ing to Mrs. Hoyle, to whom the ' gifts may be sent in care of the Stephens Fashion Department. Also being sought are gifts of hats, shoes, gloves and any other accessories such as fans and handbags. Baby and children's clothing and lingerie of grandma’s day will also be acceptable.Mary Brooks Picken. New Yorkj; fashion authority who serves asj( chairman of the Stephens Fashion i Advisory Board, on one of herj£ periodic visits to the Stephens^ campus this week, made the first jt contributions to the newly established Stephens collection, Her contributions include a Patou original in which she had her portrait painted by Neysa McMein in 1918 and a Belong original gown created in 3926, plus a 1914 dress by Madame Agnes of the New York House of Thurn in which she sat for a Hal Phyfe portrait.Mrs. Picken, the author nearly a hundred books in the field of fashion, including the '‘Dictionary of Fashion” and Dressmakers of. Paris,” was one of the founders It of the New York Fashion Group, nucleus of the prestige fashion groups now located throughout the nation.Leaders of the fashion industry serving with Mrs. Picken on the Fashion Advisory Board at Stephens in a continuing program to relate classroom instruction to industry needs and trends, are: American designers Vera Maxwell, Jo Copeland, and Adele Simpson; Paula Vogelsang, fashion consultant at Pratt Institute who has her own New York De-sign Workshop; Ellen Engel, New York head of the House of Dior, and Madame Eta Hentz, known as the museum designer” who formerly designed under the Ren-Eta label.Stephens fashion students have long turned to history, literature and art for background and inspiration for their fashion studies, ''History of Costume” is an essential part of a basic beginning course, Fashion Appreciation.”The historical costume collection •will be regularly used in classroom instruction and will also provide opportunities for unusual fashion presentations by Stephens College students pointing up fashion trends through the yers.Revival of interest in fashions of the twenties has focused new attention on fashion trends this year and taken many people to their attics to search for still existing examples of nearly forgotten fashions. It is hoped that many of these, as well as fashions of still earlier eras will find their way into this newiy established permanent collection which will benefit many students from all parts of the world.Students design under the Susie Stephens label while on the campus and their original work is featured in an annual shewing each spring. Stephens design graduates are working in fashion centers throughout the world, including New York and Paris. A library of Susie Stephens Originals is maintained at the college, representing the best work of students since the establishment ol this department in 1944.
