Miller and his crew still have to put down the carpet, hang the screensand finish installing the concession standequipment.The installation of the projection booth equipment is also still underway. “It’s fully automated, Miller said. “One touch of the button does everything but thread up the Rim. 'You still have to thread it up by hand.’The film comes to the theater on the traditional reels. The ads for coming attractions and all of the reels are spliced together and placed on a large metal platter which sits atop a pole. The film is wound off the platter, through the projector and is rewound onto a second platter below the first.Once completed, the Sawmill Square Cinema 5 will have five seperate cinemas and a total of 803 seats, making it. by Miller's calculations, one of the 10 largest theaters in Mississippi Cinema I will be the largest of the five with 235 seats. It will also be equipped with a Dolby stereo sound system and a pea descent screen which will enable it tobe used for showing three-dimensionalmovies.Cinema 5 is part of the Gulf States Theaters chain, which also owns and operates the Northside Twin Cinema. Miller began working for Gulf States as an usher when he was 17 in Bogalusa, La. He came to Laurel to become manager of the Northside Twin in October 1980.Miller said his wife, Monica Miller, will take over as manager of the Northside Twin.“We plan to keep the Northside open for the time being and see how it does,” Miller said.Miller said Cinema 5 will show matinees from Dec. 19 until Jan. 1. He said the theater also plans to have kidee matinees during the summer and late shows on the weekends.
