Trains set to roll• •into Orange again* •*beginningTRANSPORTATION:The city is added to the OCTA commuter rail line, ending a long train-travel hiatus.By LAURA-LYNNE POWELLThe Orange County RegisterORANGE — On Monday, for the first time in 22 years, trains will begin stopping at the Orange rail station instead of just pass-ing by.The first rail car will roll into town at 6:30 a.m. to pick up commuters heading north.“We’ve waited a long time for this,” said former Mayor Don ■Smith, a lifelong fan of locomotive history and one of the first officials to urge restoration of the station and the area around it. “It’s a big day for Orange.”The city is the newest stop for the commuter rail system being operated by the Orange County Transportation Authority. The system, which has 16,000 riders, is growing as more stops are added.Orange is expected to add about 100 riders to the system, a modest but significant addition, officials said.The train travels north each day from San Juan Capistrano to Los Angeles, with stops in Santa Ana, Orange and Fullerton.The early-morning stop will be the only northbound pickup each day in Orange. The southbound stop in Orange is at 6:32 p.m.Riders can board the train for free all day Monday as part of an opening-day celebration. The project is just a few blocks away from downtown Orange and the city hopes to revitalize businesses there. . -Officials weren’t able to find a developer willing to, restore the depot in time for Monday’s arriv-’ al of commuter rail, so a new platform has been built a few feet away from the vacant, stucco building.In its heyday at the turn of the century, 45 cars a day pulled away from the depot’s docks,* filled with walnuts, olives.-nd citrus, earning this city its nafni It closed in 1971. £
