C.Aldham, steamed down tho river shortly after the Mersey, tTrafalgar, 12A, which is being cut down to a 90-gttu screw steamer, was taken into dock at Chatham on Friday, and on Saturday workmen ootnmeaoed stripping her copper off, as she is to have an entire new copper bottom; her umx'r deck is nearly cleaned, and it is expected that orders will be givento cut licr in midships, to lengthen her about twelvefeet; she is also to have a considerable alteration in her stern, and a portion of it to be taken away.The immense new dock at Portsmouth is progressing most satisfactorily, nearly one-half being completed. By the removal of the braces and uprights the beauty of the masonry has been brought fully into view. This dock when finished will bo nearly 800 feet in length, and capable of receiving the Great Eastern. Grooves are cut so as to allow caissons to form one, two, or three docks as the case may require.Pensions von Government Aettsans.—A deputation, consisting of several influential inhabitants of \\ oohvich, has recently conferred with Mr. Hamilton, M.P., Secretary tothe Treasury, on the subject of revising the present system of granting pensions to workmen employed at the government dockyards. The pensions now granted are small in amount,and these are awarded upon no fixed principles. The deputation submitted that an improved system should be adopted, by means of which pensions should bo awarded for length of service, in the proportion of one-third of the ordinary wages after 20 years* service, and two-thirds after 40 ’years* service. After asking various questions on tho subject, Mr. Hamilton expressed an opinion that some change in the present system was desirable, and an alteration approximating to tho plan suggested by the deputation would be considered by the government. Information has since been received to the effect that the Chancellor of the Exchequer will introduce a bill on the subjocfe during the next session of parliament.We have pleasure in recording a gallant act. by which two lives were saved. On Thursday a female servant and child hired a machine to bathe at Southsea, and shortly after being in the water a scream was heard. It appears that tho servant imprudently waded too far out, and that a wave took her out of her depth, the gbikl clinging to her and screaming till both sunk and were being curried away by the tide. Mr. Hollingsworth, the proprietor of the King’s Booms, Southsea, rushed down the beach and into the water, with his “clothes on, and having made a dive, fortunately eaught the child by her bathing gown and brought her ashore. His assistants also followed, having jumped into a boat, and as the girl rose they were equally successful in saving her Both servant and child were placed in warm baths and speedily recovered.LAUNCH OF THE CLIO.SHEERNESS, Arorsx 28.The launch of her Majesty's screw steam corvette Clic took place this day at 2.10 p.m. The ceremony of christening the ship was performed by Mrs. Constantine Bead, wife oj Lieut. C. Read, of the Ceylon Rifle Corps, and daughter-in-law of the highly-esteemed and inueh respected Mr. S. Read master shipwright of Shcerncss Dockyard, at present confined to his official residence by sicknessThe launch of this splendid ship took place under the superintendence of Mr. W. B. Robinson,, the senior assistant tc iht master shipwright. A more beautiful launch was nevei witnessed. Tho ship moved very grace fully into the watci amidst the cheering of an immense assemblage of spectators the band cf the North Cork Rifles playing ‘''Rule, Britannia,** and “ God save the Queen.” When the launch walt; completed the workmen were allowed to leave the yard fo] the day. Tho ship was towed into the great basin, prior tc her being taken into clock to be coppered.Her dimensions are as follows—viz., extreme length 229ft. lin.; extreme breadth, 40ft. 6.V in.; topnage, 147] tons; 400-horse power engines by Ravenhill and Salkeld Her armament will consist of twenty 8-inch ofi-pounder guns and two 68-pounders upon her upper deck. Her light dr.ui^lr of water is—forward, 9 ft. 2 in,; abaft, loft. 1 in. °
