(Columbus (Ohio) IMpafclt)An immigrant story now going the rounds of tiie press shows the folly to which a rigid enforcement of poorly drawn laws may lead On a vessel entering New York harbor, lute in the evening of June 30 was a Belgian woman, coming os an immigrant to the l'n-ited States. Ju*ne 30 closed the fiscal year, and the Belgian quota for that year was already full.If the vessel had been delayed Just enough to bring it into harbor after midnight, she would have been eligible to enter on the quota of the new year. But under the law a« it stands, she had to be sent back on the same vessel on which she had come. While her case was under examination, the ship sailed, and m she had to be held at Ellis Island until it got backon the next trip. *Thus, because of the apparent lack of authority in any Individual officer or board to admit her under ihe new quota, she was forced to be field a virtual prisoner on Ellis Island for the better part of a month, and then to go back across the Atlantic and make her westward voyage over again, in order to get legal admission. And this is only one of various absurdities of the kind which have developed since the new' immigration law went into effect. Either the law itself should be at once revised, or congress should give some official or board authority to deal with such cases on the basis of justice and common sense.
