Take a trip to Moses H. Cone Memorial Park along the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Blowing Rock.A 3,600-acre tract, the park is one of 11 developed along the parkway by the National Park Service. It was deeded to the federal government in 1950.The old Cone family summer home, formerly known as Flat Top Manor, is now a center of the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild. From the front porch of this half-century-old house is a breath-taking view of man-made lakes and of the mountains.Flat Top Manor was built of materials hauled by oxen up mountain roads from the nearestLenoirThe 20-roomCone died in 1908, but after hisits own water supply piped from a nearby spring. A carbide plant produced gas for lighting and cooking. The huge wood furnaces supplied hot-air heat.Moses Cone and his brother, Ceasar, as young men moved south and established at Greens-death his widow maintained theproperty in the way she thoughthe would have desired. This was the beginning of the present vast Cone Mills Corp. which operates throughout theSouth.Flat Top Manor estate was Moses Cone’s recreation hideout, where he could indulge his hobbies of road building and tree planting. He laid out some 20 miles of roads and bridle paths, over many of which the visitor may ride today.In front of the house and in clear view. Cone constructed a 16-acre trout lake and a 22-acre bass lake.Forests covered 500 acres. No tree was ever cut unless it wasand purchase mountain craftproducts.Therelustrated evening lectures.
