N.H. radio, television stations receive awardsBEDFORD (AP) - Manchester television station WMUR took 16 awards, while radio stations WERZ in Exeter and WJYY in Concord won nine each Friday in the annual New Hampshire Associated Press Broadcasters Association competitionThe television station took six first-place awards and 10 honorable mentions for programming that included coverage of last year’s Moscow summit and the New Hampshire primaryand sports play-by-play.WERZ took seven top prizes and two honorable mentions for small market stations including primary campaign and election day coverage and stories on the Seabrook nuclear plant. WJYY, with six first place plaques and three honorable mentions, was cited among large market stations for its work on the closing of Pease Air Force Base, the primary and Gov. John Sununu's appointment as White House chief of staff.Sixteen radio and television stations were cited at the association's annual banquet Their entries were judged by broadcasters in New Jersey. New Hampshire broadcasters judged New Jersey entries earlier this year.Coverage of the series of arsons that terrorized residents of the North Country community of Jefferson won awards for WMUR, N.H. Public Television and WNHT-TV in Concord.This year, two categories were included for presidential primary coverage, one for the campaign and one for election day.WJYY and WERZ took first place in both categories, N H Public Television won top honors for campaign coverage and WMUR was cited forelection night coverage.The Manchester station also was cited for a documentary on its Moscow summit coverage, a public affairs program on the New Hampshire Special Olympics, a sports special on sky diving, sports play-by-play and feature videography. It won honorable mentions for features on the Davis quintuplets and Isle of Shoals as well as videography for the Isle of Shoals program. Other honorable mentions were awarded for gene al election day, spot news coverage of the Moscow summit, breaking news coverage of the Jefferson fires and a Manchester murder, best newscast and best sportscast.N.H. Public Television also was cited for spot news coverage of the Jefferson fires and videography of the fire story1, as well as a feature on the oldest surviving colomal murals in America. It won honorable mentions for a documentary on disabled babies, illiteracy and videography for a feature about the variety of items in the basement of the New Hampshire Historical Society.WNHT, which went off the air last month, won first place for best newscast and breaking news coverage of the Jefferson fires and an honorable mention for a documentary on nonprofit groups.WNNE took a first place for best sportscast and honorable mention for a feature on the Shrine Hospital.In addition to its primary coverage. WJYY won first place for breaking news coverage of the Pease closing announcement, Gov. Sununu's White House appointment, public affairs programming and a sports special on the Loudon Classic motorcycle races.
