Fran Harris to speak at Press BreakfastFran Harris, Detroit, Mich., past national president of Women in Communications Inc. (formerly Theta Sigma Phi), will be the featured speaker at this year’s Ladies of the Press breakfast, at the Inn on the Park, April 30 at 10 a. m. Mrs. Norman Anderson, 5325 Marsh Rd., is general chairperson.Harris retired in 1974 after an outstanding career in broadcasting and advertising. After graduation from Grinnell College, Iowa, she began her career with the Young and Rubicam Advertising Agency, Detroit, and became well-known through her “Nancy Dixon” radio program.For 29 years, she worked for WWJ radio and TV stations in Detroit, functioning as women’s editor, and special features coordinator.She has served on all levels as a volunteer in a variety of capacities including board member of the American Advertising Federation and chairman of the Women’s Council of AAF; chairman of the Michigan Asociation of Governing Boards of State Colleges and Universities; Wayne County Commission on Aging; and a U. S. delegate to the Asian-American Broadcasters conference in Hawaii. 'She received the coveted WICI Headliner award in 1952 and was the recipient twice, of the Detroit Advertising Woman of the Year award. She also received the Alfred Sloane National Safety Award and the George Foster Peabody National Award for her broadcast programs; Soroptimist Woman of the Year; Grinnell College Distinguished Alumni Award and Honorary Member National Federation of Press Women.A member of Broadcast Pioneers, Mrs. Harris is listed in “Who’s Who of American Women,” “Who’s Who in the Midwest,” “World Who’s Who of Women” and “Foremost Women in Communications.”She has published a booklet written on a grant from International Women’s Year, entitled “Focus: Michigan Women 1701-1977.”
