Old Concordia May Become Care HomeThe now-vacant Concordia Hospital in Elmwood may be back in operation before summer — as a personal care home for between 60 and 70 patients. % ;Negotiations now are under way between the government and the board of the new Concordia Hospital in East Ki1-donan and, if the talks conclude successfully, the facility would be run by Concordia on behalf of the city and the province.Winnipeg's civic executive policy committee was told last week by the city's administration that the old hospital building was available for rental atabout 520,000 a year.However, a spokesman for the Manitoba health department said in a telephone interview Tuesday, “At this point it looks more like the rent isgoing to be SI a year.“1 would say the old hospital will be back in operation just about as soon as negotiations with the board of Concordia Hospital, or. failing those, talks with someone else, can be completed and the place can be staffed,”The hospital, located on De-salabcrry Avenue, has been vacant since November, when Concordia moved to 1050 Con*! enrdia Avenue. East Kildonan. iThe old bukling was acquired by thc_City of Winnipeg for SI when the city gave ConcordiaHospital board a Sl.,560,000 grant to cover the 20 per- cent owner's equity which is required before the provincial government assumes 80 per cent financing of new hospital projects.The new Concordia Hospital has 132 beds and cost $7.5 million.Negotiations aimed at bringing the old Concordia back into operation as a personal care home were started with the Concordia Hospital board a number of weeks ago. Both sides have expressed an interest in the project, but the Concordia board so far has not committed ilself.The government source said reports about the Concordia talks were supposed to have remained quiet for a little longer. However, confronted with these reports, the sourcesaid they had to be confirmed“in all honesty.”Concordia I-Tospilal board was approached because it has long-standing experience i n running personal carc homes.! such as Eethania Mttnonilc Personal Care Home.Meanwhile, the old Concordia Hospital building, now valued at $275,000. is reported in excellent condition and practically ready for occupation.There is a waiting list of between 800 and S190 names of el-1 derly people who require nurs-i iog home beds in the city. 1
