Cents' boss dies, was WCHL leaderCALGARY (CP) — Well-known Calgary sportsman Scotty Munro, 57, died of cancer at 9 p.m. Friday in Calgary General Hospital.Munro was born in 1917 in Swift Current, Sask., and started his coaching career in Yorkton almost 40 years ago.He later moved to Moose Jaw Canucks where he coached such future NHL stars as Bert Olmstead and Emile Francis.Munro’s hockey career then took him to Gravelbourg, Sask., and Lethbridge.He lived in the Crowsnest Pass, B.C., Humboldt, Sask., and spent 11 years in Estevan, Sask., before finally moving to Calgary seven years ago.Munro bought into the Calgary Centennials, turning the club into a second-placeteam in the Western Division*of the Western Canada Hockey League in his first year.He was appointed vice-president in charge of finances of the Calgary Cowboys when the World Hockey Association club moved to Calgary from Vancouver.“Not only our league but hockey in Western Canada has suffered a severe loss,’’ said Ed Chynoweth, president of the Western Canada Hockey League.He said that had it not been for Munro’s tireless efforts “many a young man playing professional hockey today might not be there.”“Scotty Munro along with Bill Hunter of Edmonton were for years the guiding light of our league,” he said.Chynoweth said he intends to recommend to the WCHL governors that a committee beset up to see how the league might commemorate a lasting memory of Scotty Munro.
