SUM NEK E. ATHERTONSumner Edward Atherton, 59, 711 Beach Road, Sarasota, died Saturday at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Bom in Roxbury, Mass., he moved to Sarasota six years ago from West Lebanon, N.H., and was a member of the West Lebanon Congregational Church.He was a veteran aviator, retired from the Navy withthe rank of captain, and wasmember of the Siesta Key Lions Auxiliary.He leaves his wife, Martha B. (Kennard) Atherton; three sons, John S. Atherton of Exeter, N.H., Paul K. Atherton of Cornish Flat, N.H., and Jeffrey Charles Atherton of Sarasota; two daughters, Martha J. Hutchinson o f Wards Cove, Alaska, and Mary T. Hathorn of Vershire, Vt, and five grandchildren.A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the Sarasota Funeral Home, 3340 Bee Ridge Road, with Hugh Potter officiating. Burial will be in New Hampshire.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sarasota Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
