Crooks, 96, one of theoldest residents of Van Wert, anda veteran of the Civil War, diedThursday afternoon at his home onElm street, following an illness ofabout two years.Mr. Crooks was born May 4,1840, in Tuscarawas county, Ohio,and removed to Van Wert countyat an early age. In June, 1862, heenlisted in Co. K, of the Eightyseventh Ohio Volunteer Infantry, served also in Co. F of the same regiment and in Co. R of the 178th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.The nonagenarian took part in a number of battles in the southern campaign and later was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. For a number of years he conducted a farming implement. store in Van Wert. Mr. Crooks was a member of Van Wert Post 100, Grand Army of the Republic, and a member of the Presbyterian church.Surviving are two sons, C. L. Crooks of WeBt First street, and Rev. C. M. Crooks of IJarre, Massachusetts, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death November 24, 1934.Funeral arrangements in charge of B. L.
